The Origins of Transcendental Meditation

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi
Founder of Transcendental Meditation

Transcendental Meditation has its origins in the ancient Vedic Tradition of Enlightenment of India. This knowledge was handed down by Vedic Masters from one generation to another. Maharishi spent many years studying with his master before travelling the world and introducing the technique of Transcendental Meditation to the world. In a period spanning 50 years the technique was taught to over 6 million people from all walks of life, background and religion.

Here in Ireland, TM is taught under the auspices of MIU Ireland, a registered educational charity with all registered teachers having completed the training programmes established by Maharishi.

Maharishi on TM

“One Simple Procedure”

"Transcendental Meditation opens the awareness to the infinite reservoir of energy, creativity, and intelligence that lies deep within everyone.

By enlivening this most basic level of life, Transcendental Meditation is that one simple procedure which can raise the life of every individual and every society to its full dignity, in which problems are absent and perfect health, happiness, and a rapid pace of progress are the natural features of life."

“A State of Inner Wakefulness”

"The Transcendental Meditation technique is an effortless procedure for allowing the excitations of the mind gradually to settle down until the least excited state of mind is reached. This is a state of inner wakefulness with no object of thought or perception, just pure consciousness aware of its own unbounded nature. It is wholeness, aware of itself, devoid of differences, beyond the division of subject and object – transcendental consciousness. It is a field of all possibilities, where all creative potentialities exist together, infinitely correlated but as yet unexpressed. It is a state of perfect order, the matrix from which all the laws of nature emerge, the source of creative intelligence."
